The Global Environmental Facility (GEF)
has financed a pre-feasibility study of constructing a biogas
plant in Jordan to demonstrate and introduce the bioga s
technologies in Jordan and the region and to study the
socio-economic impacts of utilizing municipal solid waste for
producing electricity and high quality fertilizer. The study has facilitated the
construction of a pilot biogas project which is the first of its
kind in the Middle East region that examines innovative options
for the use of renewable energy sources reducing the
uncontrolled release of greenhouse gases (GHG) to the atmosphere
as well as reducing odors and bad smells to the nearby
community.
The project was funded by a grant for total amount of USD 5.5 millions provided by GEF,
the Danish Government and the Government of Jordan. The plant
has been running in smooth operation since its commissioning on
May 2000. The project rated capacity is one megawatt which is
composed of two integrated technical parts.
